Abstract

Komercijalni uzgoj genetski modificiranih kultura počeo je 1996. godine u SAD-u, dok se dvadesetak godina kasnije takve kulture siju gotovo na svim kontinentima. Europska politika prema GMO-u počiva na načelu opreza te zahtjeva deklariranje genetski modificirane hrane, dok SAD genetski modificirane kulture smatra substancijalno jednakima pa ne postoji potreba za njihovim označavanjem. SAD je i danas najveći proizvoĎač genetski modificiranih kultura, dok europski kontinent ima relativno male površine pod GMO-om. Postojanje Zajedničke poljoprivredne politike Europske unije ne znači da se sve zemlje članice Europske unije protive GMO-u, jer se u nekima od njih sije GMO, dok u nekima prevladava trend proglašenja zona slobodnih od GMO-a, što su učinile i sve hrvatske ţupanije. Europski potrošači strahuju od potpisivanja Transatlantskog ugovora o trgovini i investicijama izmeĎu SAD-a i Europske unije jer se boje da će se njime omogućiti uvoz američke hrane koja ima znatno niţe standarde od europske hrane. Ekološka poljoprivreda i ruralni razvoj nameću se kao poţeljna i ne tako teško ostvariva alternativa GMO-u.

Abstract (english)

The commercial cultivation of genetically modified crops started in 1996 in the United States, while twenty years later that kind of crops can be found on almost every continent. The European policy on GMOs is based on the precautionary principle and requires labeling of genetically modified foods, while the USA considers genetically modified cultures substantially equal and so there is no need for their labeling. The USA is still the largest manufacturer of genetically modified crops while the European continent has relatively small plots of land with GMO. The existence of the Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union does not mean that all EU member states are against GMO, because GM foods are cultivated in some of them, while in others prevails the trend of declaration of zones free of GMOs, what all Croatian counties have done as well. European consumers fear due to the signing of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership between the USA and the European Union because they are afraid that it will enable the import of American foods which have significantly lower standards than European foods. The organic agriculture and rural development impose as a desirable alternative to GMO which is not so difficult to achieve.
