Abstract
Approximately twenty thousand years ago when people, through their work, started to achieve their first food and merchandise surplus and when the increasing growth of human needs and desires, as well as human wealth, occurred, the consumerism started to emerge. Since then, the consumerism didn’t stop developing and expanding to new areas and markets on which it could place its products, ideas and values. Advocates and representatives of consumerism, like advertisers, mass media, various international corporations, manufacturers, retailers and others, found a very valuable market in children who are very important as current and future consumers that impact consumption of other people, especially parents and other members of the family, peers and friends. Various experts, schools, development of new technologies and the internet, department stores, governments and even professors and parents, assist in even greater engagement of children in markets and consumer culture. In that way the children well-being is being directly and indirectly influenced, leaving different, often not so harmless consequences for them – from those of physical, psychological and emotional nature, through moral ones to those that we narrowly connect with appearance and development of delinquent and violent behavior in children and youth, bullying and child labor in inhumane conditions, and many others. Those are the facts which we confirmed in this paperwork through literature, researches and examples from different parts of the world, and which all of us – parents, experts, professors, activists, local communities, institutions, governments and many others – make more responsible in undertaking of certain actions that have the goal of limiting impacts of the consumerism, or, to be precise, its representatives, on natural growth and development of children all around the world.
